Negotiating Salary With Confidence: Scripts That Work
· 8 min read · Malish Careers
Most candidates lose money in the first thirty seconds of the compensation conversation by naming a number before they have any leverage.
When asked for expectations early, deflect politely: 'I would like to understand the scope fully first. Do you have a budgeted range for this role?' This is normal, professional and expected.
When an offer arrives below your target, express genuine enthusiasm, then anchor with evidence: market benchmarks, the scope discussed and the specific results you have delivered. Ask for a specific number rather than 'a bit more'.
Always negotiate the package, not just base salary. Sign-on bonus, review timing, remote flexibility, title and professional development budget are frequently easier for a hiring manager to move than base pay.
